Project description

Six countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom) are participating in the Acer-European Schoolnet Educational Netbook Pilot in schools. Netbooks are a rapidly evolving category of small, light and inexpensive laptop computers suited for general computing and accessing web-based applications.

Despite netbooks still being a new phenomena in educational settings, there are several projects around the world where each learner has a personal computer, allowing for one-to-one pedagogy. Netbooks facilitate more engaging and motivating learning anywhere anytime, offering a wide range of collaborative opportunities.

The pilot is interested in exploring how the introduction of netbooks and one-to-one pedagogy in schools could change the processes involved in teaching and learning.

This pilot aims at understanding and documenting how learners and teachers can use netbooks in various educational contexts:

  • Place: in school vs. out of school use
  • Context: individual use vs. collaborative use
  • Purpose: educational use vs. leisure use

The pre-pilot began early in 2010 and will run until June 2010 involving 10 classes in each of the six participating countries. The full deployment phase will run from September 2010 to June 2011 involving 50 classes in each country.

A cooperation agreement will be signed between the participating schools and European Schoolnet which outlines the tasks, rights and responsibilities between the pilot participants in relation to the equipment provided.

Each participating class will have:

  • Acer netbooks for learners
  • Acer notebooks for teachers
  • An Acer desktop that can function as a mini server
  • Access to a multilingual resources portal
  • An online teachers’ community to develop and share ideas

The evaluation of the pilot takes into account the feedback from all stakeholders including teachers, school heads, school ICT coordinators, learners and their parents. This will help better understand the needs of the future classroom.
