Acer Incredible Green Contest

Acer have launched the first annual 'Incredible Green Contest', with the aim of creating a cleaner, greener, living environment. The campaign aims to raise awareness on issues around energy use and conservation by encouraging students to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to energy saving, and will be open to pupils at all levels worldwide.

The objective of the contest, which is being held under the theme '2020 Future TechLife enabled by green innovation', is for pupils to apply what they learn in class to inventions and innovations that reduce consumption, and help preserve the green environment.

The grand prize for the competition winner is $60,000. Participants can register as individuals, or as a team of up to five members, until 31 October 2012, while the deadline for submission of entries is 15 November 2012. Full competition details are available here.

Case study research on 1:1 initiatives in Europe

European Schoolnet is carrying research on case studies that describe the implementation of 1:1 initiatives in Europe. The study, commissioned by Microsoft, aims to describe how 1:1 netbook initiatives can be successfully designed and implemented at various levels at policy making level (policy perspective) and at school level (practitioner perspective).

More specifically the study has the following objectives:

  • to identify six 1:1 initiatives, which will be analysed through case studies;
  • to provide a framework for describing and investigating the local, regional, national
    initiatives implemented;
  • to provide in depth descriptions and analysis on the deployment of 1:1 initiatives;
  • to identify the enablers and inhibitors regarding the successful deployment of local, regional, national initiatives implemented.

The final report will be targeted to high- level policy makers, who wish to implement a 1:1 initiative and/or to learn from other countries’ experiences. The project started in March 2012 and the final report will be available in October 2012.

Developing practical guidelines for tablets in the workshop

The workshop for the Tablet Pilot teachers was held last week in Brussels. 17 teachers from across Europe got together to present their experiences and lessons learnt with the tablets. The workshop was held at the European Schoolnet's Future Classroom Lab, a fully equipped, reconfigurable, teaching and learning space. 

Over the two days, the teachers were also introduced to the creation of learning scenarios for the future classroom and creation of practical guidelines to other schools and teachers planning the use of tablets for teaching and learning.

The practical guidelines as well as the final evaluation results of the pilot will be available in October.

1:1 in science education: teachers and pupils report positive impact on learning outcomes

The new research, prepared by European Schoolnet in collaboration with Fourier and Acer, found that the use of technological tools in the carrying out of experiments can play an important role in motivating young people to study STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).

The study, ‘Impact of data loggers on science teaching and learning’, examined the use of sensors and data loggers in science classes across six countries. The data recording equipment was used in conjunction with netbook computers as part of the Acer-European Schoolnet 1:1 netbook pilot.

The study found that the use of digital tools in recording the results of experiments in science classes, as well as producing results less prone to human error, also played an important role in getting the digitally literate pupils of today interested in science, and in enquiry-based methods of research. Three-quarters of pupils felt that their understanding of science, and their ability to critically evaluate data, benefited from the use of the devices. Teachers reported that the pilot exceeded their expectations in relation to the positive impact that the recording equipment had on autonomous learning among pupils, and in pupils’ ability to link science to everyday concepts.

Comparative study on tablet operating systems

Spain is one of the eight countries taking part in the Acer-European Schoolnet Tablet Pilot which explores the pedagogical benefits that could be gained from the use of tablet computers in the classroom. In the framework of the pilot, the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, has carried out a comparative study on the functionality of the tablets when used with different operating systems.

The report of this study describes the project implementation in Spain and the results of the comparison of different operating system. The tablet used in the project is Acer Iconia W500 and the operating systems investigated were Android, Linux Ubuntu and Windows.

España es uno de los ocho países que toman parte en el proyecto piloto coordinado por Acer y European Schoolnet sobre el uso de las tabletas en el contexto educativo.  En el marco del proyecto, INTEF (el Instituto Nacional de Tecnologías Educativas y de Formación del Profesorado del Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes de España) ha llevado a cabo un estudio comparativo sobre la funcionalidad de la tableta con diferentes sistemas operativos.

El informe del estudio describe la implementación del proyecto en España y los resultados de la comparación de los sistemas operativos. El modelo de la tableta usada en el proyecto es Acer Iconia W500 y los sistemas operativos investigados fueron Android, Linux Ubuntu y Windows.

Implementing eTextbooks in 1:1 pedagogies

 

Around 40 representatives from Ministries of Education took part in a strategic briefing on the theme of ‘New Directions for eTextbooks’ on 24 May. Senior policy makers from the European Schoolnet Steering Committee were joined by Ministry of Education representatives from the European Commission's ICT Thematic Group.

 

The briefing, led by David Baugh from Learning Central UK, enabled Ministries to: hear how iPads are impacting on ICT use in schools; have a hands-on session with iPad apps; and learn more about Apple's new iBooks Author software and Course Manager. Andrew Jewell, Senior Teacher at Cedars School in Scotland also provided an insight into how his school has been able to successfully implement iPads 1:1 in the curriculum.

 

Interactive projectors: supporting 1:1 pedagogy

Interactive projectors can provide teachers with an important technological tool, while also increasing student motivation and learning outcomes, according to a recently-published study. The research, conducted by European Schoolnet in conjunction with Acer, found that the introduction of interactive projectors to a classroom can complement traditional teaching methods, while also working as part of a wider technological deployment or supporting one-to-one (1:1) learning activities.

The study, which examined the use of Acer DLP interactive projectors, was based on research obtained in classrooms in 12 schools from six countries across Europe. The research found that interactive projectors had certain attributes that particularly lent themselves to 1:1 programmes, such as facilitating pupils sharing work, prepared on their own netbooks, with the rest of the class. The study also found that for pupils to obtain the maximum pedagogical benefit from the introduction of an interactive projector, the use of the new technology should be embedded across a range of subject areas, and integrated as insofar as is possible into the school’s curriculum.

Tablet Pilot pre-evaluation questionnaire launched

All the Tablet Pilot teachers are now invited to participate in the pre-evaluation activity. The data gathered through this questionnaire and the one organised at the end of the pilot will be used to compare and to see how the use of ICT changes during the pilot experimentation. The teachers are asked to select a questionnaire according to their language.

Professional development opportunities for teachers in a social media study

The SMILE project (Social Media in Learning and Education) is European Schoolnet’s initiative aimed at promoting the safe and responsible use of social media among children. The central element of the SMILE project will be the hosting of an online learning laboratory. The laboratory, funded by Facebook’s Digital Citizenship Research Grants, will enable 100 teachers, from European Schoolnet’s 30 member countries, to identify best practices in how social media tools can be used to enhance pupils’ learning experience. The results of this collaborative research project will then be disseminated to other teachers and pedagogical policymakers through European Schoolnet’s communications network.

European Schoolnet is currently recruiting teachers to participate in SMILE’s online learning laboratory. The online learning laboratory will commence in mid-April 2012, and will last for 3-4 weeks; teachers who may be interested in participating in this project should email smile@eun.org by Tuesday 10 April.

Tablet Pilot: do you want to host a case study visit?

European Schoolnet is organising a series of visits to some of the schools involved in the Acer-European Schoolnet Tablet Pilot, in order to create case studies on individual schools’ experiences. These case studies will play a part in the formation of a qualitative research approach to the pilot project; how the initiative was implemented at a school level (e.g. the level of training, support and peer exchanges required), while also examining the project’s impact at teaching level (e.g. any changes in the level or quality of interaction between teachers and students, pedagogical practices, or any issues encountered over the course of the pilot).
